The Indian Meteorological Service classifies 7 climatic regions: Himalayas, Assam and West Bengal, the Indo-Gangetic Plain/North Indian Plain (a huge section of north-central India), the Western Ghats and coast (south-western India), the Deccan Plateau (south-central India), and the Eastern Ghats and coast. In general, Northern India is cooler, Central is hot and dry, and South India has a tropical climate. India is hit by 2 monsoons yearly –- the southwest and the northeast monsoon. In early June the southwest monsoon, the bigger and more widespread of the 2, heads inland from the sea and makes its way up India’s west coast. By mid-July, most of the country is blanketed by rain. This clears in northwest India by October. The northeast monsoon hits India’s east coast during November and December. It’s a short but heavy monsoon. The states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala get most of the rainfall. Monsoons cause flooding and destruction and also widespread diseases. And disrupts transport services.

• You'll encounter this universal, all-purpose, spontaneous gesture all over India – the Indian headshake or head wobble which can mean many things: like "yes" or "OK," or a greeting, or to acknowledge what you are saying but not necessarily to agree with you. A fast and continuous head wobble means that the person really understands. The more vigorous, the more the understanding. A quick side to side wobble means "yes" or "alright". A slow soft wobble, sometimes accompanied by a smile, is a sign of friendship.
